43rd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment

The 43rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was a regiment of infantry that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The unit was first formed in September 1862 in response to President Abraham Lincoln's call for 300,000 men to serve for nine months. The nucleus of the regiment was the Second Battalion Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, a unit dating to 1798 known as the Boston Light Infantry and nicknamed the "Tigers." The 43rd Massachusetts therefore became known as the "Tiger Regiment." The regiment trained at Camp Meigs in Readville, Massachusetts just outside of Boston. They departed Massachusetts on October 24, assigned to Maj. Gen. John G. Foster's Department of North Carolina, later designated as the XVIII Corps. The regiment was stationed in New Bern, North Carolina. In December, the regiment took part in the Goldsboro Expedition. The objective of this maneuver was to disrupt the Confederate supply line along the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad by destroying the Goldsboro Bridge. During this expedition, was lightly engaged in the Battles of Kinston, White Hall and Goldsboro Bridge.

Quin Friary

Die Quin Friary ist ein ehemaliges Franziskanerkloster in Quin im County Clare im Westen der Republik Irland. Im Volksmund wird das Kloster als „Quin Abbey“ bezeichnet, was jedoch irreführend ist, da es niemals eine Abtei war. Das Kloster wurde auf den Ruinen einer normannischen Burg errichtet. Diese war um 1280 von dem Adligen Thomas de Clare, Lord of Thomond, als quadratische Anlage mit vier runden Ecktürmen errichtet worden. Im Jahre 1318 tötete die Garnison der Burg den irischen Clanchef der Uí Lideadha, woraufhin es Iren vom Clan der Uí Caisín, unter Cúmheadha Mac Conmara gelang, die Burg zu erstürmen und die Mauern teilweise zu schleifen. Um 1350 war bereits ein Kirchengebäude auf den Ruinen der Burg errichtet worden, welches jedoch nahezu vollständig dem Neubau einer Klosterkirche weichen musste, als sich die Familie der MacNamaras dazu entschloss, Franziskaner nach Quin zu holen und ein Kloster zu stiften. Das genaue Gründungsdatum ist umstritten, jedoch existiert eine päpstliche Bulle von 1433, die die Gründung genehmigt. Der Kunsthistoriker Harold G. Leask hält einen früheren Gründungstermin aus stilistischen Erwägungen heraus für unwahrscheinlich.

Monel

Monel či Monelův kov je slitina niklu a mědi. Název Monel je registrován jako trademark americké firmy Special Metals Corporation. Monel vyrobil v roce 1901 Robert Crooks Stanley, slitinu pojmenoval po tehdejším prezidentu firmy Ambrose Monellovi. Monel vykazuje výborné mechanické vlastnosti a chemickou odolnost v náročném prostředí, např. v dlouhodobém kontaktu se slanou vodou, ale i v chemickém průmyslu. Často bývá využit tam, kde již nedostačují vlastnosti nerezových ocelí.
